William White, at Auckland, who was one of the oldest European settlers having arrived in New Zealand in 1819. Briefly describes some of his exploits.
pp.401-403 [Editorial]
Discussion of the contents of two constituency addresses; one from Sir George Grey to Auckland and one from Mr MacAndrew to Otago concerning the abolition of provincial governments. Reports that Grey states that there should be a small central government to administer customs duties and so forth, and that all will be absolutely subordinate to Great Britain, which will continue to hold the sovereign power. Outlines Grey's plans for two legislatures in the North Island, one in Auckland, the capital, and one in Wellington. The Editor states that the newspaper holds no opinion on the words of either gentleman, but is merely placing the options before their readers.

Report of the Court of Appeal decision concerning Karaitiana v Sutton over the ownership of Mangateretere, that ruled in favour of a legal sale and that all leases and mortgages held good. States that the ruling was based on the Native Land Act of 1869.

Report concerning the `Ring' land transaction debate currently before the House during which Mr Sheehan continued with his revelations concerning the translators, outlining the new employment positions that each of four main Hawke's Bay translators now hold. Contains examples of land transactions to describe the methods used by the European purchasers, and discusses the Heretaunga Block and how one of the owners, Manaena, was induced into signing his name to the deed. Criticises the Native Land Court and its ignorance of how various Maori land laws work, and details the jury's findings in the Ōmarunui case which was before the Supreme Court. Contains details of the findings.

Describes a meeting at which Ngāti Kahungunu chiefs reached decisions on four main issues: that land left by Pāora Te Apatu should be given to his nephew; that alcohol should not be taken into Ngāti Kahungunu villages; that a Minister of the Church should be asked to reside in their area and that they would take steps to fund his work; and that they should discourage the work of Maori doctors, and any caught dispensing traditional Maori cures should be handed over to government and charged with committing a great evil on the people.

Explains why the land at Wairoa should not be included in the land sale to the government and states that the descendants of Te Koari cannot eat money and that when money is given it soon completely disappears and has no lasting benefit. States that he will do his best to hold onto the land and will not take the money offered for it. Contains metaphoric language.
