Ātea incorporates a broad collection process for a wide range of mātauranga. The Ātea Core develops a framework to store, protect and share the mātauranga that is held in the Core. The Core is a fully searchable database of spoken, written and visual content, developed and extending the capabilities of the Open Source Greenstone Digital Library software.

The development technologies and processes that use Māori-language data to ensure Human-Computer Interactions are performed using te reo Māori. The models draw upon Language Models and Deep-Learning based Artificial Intelligence techniques to deliver capabilities such as Text-to-Speech and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for te reo.
